Allies Take the Lead While U.S. Democrats Stumble in the Fight Against Authoritarianism

In a stunning but unsurprising turn of events, Italy has reportedly suspended a $1.6 billion Starlink purchase from SpaceX, citing national security concerns and Elon Musk’s ties to far-right movements, Russia, and Trumpism. This bold decision signals a growing global recognition of Musk as a political and security liability—a conclusion that, frustratingly, the Democratic Party has yet to fully embrace.

Europe Takes Action, U.S. Democrats Stay Passive
Italy’s move isn’t an isolated case. Across the world, U.S. allies are doing more to check Musk and Trump’s radical influence than American politicians:
• Germany and the EU have been aggressive in regulating disinformation and hate speech, directly pressuring Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) to comply with their Digital Services Act.
• France and Germany have raised concerns over Musk’s erratic behavior affecting Starlink’s security and role in global conflicts, particularly after his intervention in Ukraine’s drone warfare.
• The UK and EU have launched antitrust investigations into Musk’s control over social media and AI, viewing his unchecked power as a threat to democracy.
Yet, in the United States, Musk continues to enjoy government contracts, subsidies, and political influence with little resistance from the Democratic Party. His companies rake in billions in federal funding while he platforms far-right extremists, spreads disinformation, and actively undermines Democratic leadership.
The Democratic Party’s Failure to Confront Power
Instead of leading the charge against tech billionaires weaponizing their platforms for extremism, Democrats have been slow, reactive, and at times complicit.
• President Biden’s administration has hesitated to take meaningful antitrust action against Musk, even as he consolidates power across industries.
• Congressional Democrats have failed to pass legislation that would hold tech giants like Musk accountable for amplifying extremism and disinformation.
• Some Democrats, including Schumer, have even helped advance policies that indirectly benefit Musk’s business empire.
This inaction has real consequences: Musk’s influence continues to grow, Trumpism festers, and global democracy erodes—all while allies take the actions the U.S. should be leading.
It’s Time to Fight Back
The Democratic Party must wake up and recognize that Musk and Trump are not just political opponents—they are existential threats to democracy. They must:
• Cut off government funding to Musk’s empire until he ceases to undermine democracy.
• Launch federal investigations into Musk’s security risks, business dealings, and foreign ties.
• Pass stronger tech regulation that prevents billionaires from using their platforms to spread fascism and destabilize governments.
If Italy can recognize Musk’s danger and act accordingly, there is no excuse for the Democratic Party to remain frozen in fear or complacency. If they continue to fumble this fight, allies will continue to take the lead—and history will not be kind to those who failed to act.
